When it comes to interiors, the big design moves typically garner the most attention. Indeed, inventive architectural forms, bold colours or tactile textures can set the tone for a room. Though often overlooked, more granular details, like hardware, also go a long way in adding hints of personality while working to make spaces more functional. Below, we’ve rounded up five collections that exemplify this very ethos.
In conceiving the Peak Lever collection for Colombo Design America, Patrick Jouin took inspiration from nature — namely, the undulating ridges of mountain ranges. When the light hits just right, the handle’s subtle curves are illuminated, bringing out its dimensionality. More than just an exercise in aesthetics, Peak Lever prioritizes ergonomics and durability in equal measure. Made of Cromall, a high-performance alloy of zinc and aluminum, the handles are designed to stand up to high-traffic areas. Offered in polished and satin chrome, matte black, and PVD-treated finishes such as satin gold, matte graphite and matte vintage, there’s a finish to suit any space.
For most projects, hardware selection comes down to aesthetic preference. Retrofits, however, come with a unique set of challenges. To avoid refinishing millwork altogether, pre-existing mounting holes need to be covered, making choices more limited. Nest Studio’s Aperture series was designed for this very use case. Offered in several lengths with multiple mounting points that accommodate a range of centre-to-centre dimensions, the pulls and knobs are unified by their linear design which plays with positive and negative space. The highly customizable collection is available in white oak and brass, in different finishes, and a universal backplate can be added in a matching or contrasting material.
Boasting a rainbow of 63 Corbusier-inspired shades, FSB’s hardware collection delivers the perfect pop of colour. Available for the Belgian brand’s 1267 series of door handles (inspired by an original Mies van der Rohe design) and select ErgoSystem A100 models of accessibility hardware, the curated palette is expertly coordinated for mixing and matching. The former is also offered in bronze, stainless steel or aluminum, in line with Mies’ signature less-is-more design approach. The ErgoSystem, meanwhile, designed for public and private bathroom applications, includes an angled safety rail, drop-down support rail, wall hooks, toilet roll holders and more. With the addition of the Les Couleurs colourways, both collections are now as fun as they are functional.
Versatility is the defining feature of Berenson’s extensive line of decorative cabinet hardware, with styles that range from industrial to mid-century modern in a variety of trend-inspired finishes like luxurious Modern Brushed Gold and contemporary Matte Black. Highlights include Radial Reign (shown), a design that offers contrast in colour, texture, or both, and more minimalistic offerings such as Meridian and Brookridge. Many are compatible with panelled appliances and feature greater hand clearance and softened grips that improve accessibility, making them an ideal addition to any kitchen.
A focus on ergonomics was the main driver behind this collaboration between architectural hardware brand Formani and product design consultant Gensler. Comprised of door, window and furniture fittings, as well as complementary accessories, the Rivio collection features a sleek cutaway detail that makes for a more natural and efficient grip. The handle seamlessly flows from slender to solid, embodying an overarching concept of “transition.” The collection is offered in two variants (curved or 90-degree angle); four finishes (satin stainless steel, PVD satin gold, PVD satin black, and bronze powder coat); and is suitable for applications that range from hospitality to office to residential. Understatedly elegant, “the design proves that even in the smallest details there can be a great impact,” says Pim Aarts, Owner and Managing Director of Formani.
